Report from on ICST 2013 Conference

From 18th to 22th of March 2013, the 6th Edition of IEEE International Conference on Software Testing, Verification and Validation (ICST) was held in Luxembourg.
The representatives of the Soflab Technology also took part in this international conference bringing together theorists and practitioners in a variety of areas related to software quality.

Conference Agenda consisted of three main blocks: practical experience, research & theory and specialised workshops.

The most interesting topics and trends presented at the Conference included:

  • a new, international software testing standard – ISO/IEC 29119/IEEE. It was presented by Stuart Reid, who participated in its preparation in the ISO working group and also co-founded the ISTQB standard. ISO/IEC 29119/IEEE shows in intelligible way, the process and test documentation, and its official presentation is scheduled for the third quarter of 2013;
  • use of the a concept concerning the mutations (including the mutational robustness) to improve the quality of software. Prof. Stephanie Forrest from the University of New Mexico has told about surprising similarity between IT and biological systems, which allows the application of biological mutations concept to improve the quality of the software;
  • Combinatorial Testing Workshops – aimed to show that combinatorial testing could significantly reduce the number of implemented test cases, without losing the effectiveness of defects detection.
  • The Conference allowed us to update our knowledge of international trends in researches related to software quality. Among the speakers, scientists were the most represented group and in our opinion presentations failed to refer to reality and transferring theory into practice, in response to the needs of companies supplying or buying software.
